The Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC)™ was formed for the sole purpose of providing diversity and inclusion management preparation courses and materials; administering diversity certification exams; and designating diversity and inclusion credentials to Certified Diversity Professionals (CDP)™ and Certified Diversity Executives (CDE)™.
As a subsidiary of the Society for Diversity, the Institute for Diversity Certification was founded in 2009 by Leah Smiley. Smiley leads a team of people who update the tests bi-annually, review the study guides, teach the preparation courses and assess the candidate projects. Read the brochure
Our program focuses on the business of Diversity & Inclusion versus the theoretical tenets. For example, much of our content addresses management expectations, linking diversity and inclusion goals to organizational objectives, and how to get better results. The CDP exam centers on the day-to-day operations, while the CDE exam centers on large scale and advanced D&I strategies.
About the Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC)™
Certification is different from a "certificate" program. In a certificate program, individuals affirm that they have acquired a certain level of knowledge, usually by taking a class with a training provider or an educational institution. Prior knowledge and experience are not required, nor is it necessary to continue professional development activities in that particular subject.
Certification, on the other hand, represents a declaration of a particular individual's professional competence through knowledge and experience. And, it requires an ongoing commitment to professional development and mastery of a particular field through recertification. Typically, certified individuals are conferred with credentials, such as SPHR, SHRM-CP, or CPLP, that attest to the individual's expertise in a particular field.
The Institute for Diversity Certification awards the Certified Diversity Professional (CDP)™ and Certified Diversity Executive (CDE)™ credentials. Compare the CDP and CDE programs to determine which credential best suits your career goals.
Our program does not simply "teach" to pass the test--it prepares individuals to be successful in the field of Diversity and Inclusion, and to get consistent, measurable results. Essentially, the Institute for Diversity Certification is a business management program that operates as a global framework for recognizing and rewarding high quality, knowledgeable professionals who strive for excellence in the field of Diversity and Inclusion.

How to Apply for the
The Institute for Diversity Certification intends to seek accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Our membership is currently active with the NCCA's Institute for Credentialing Excellence.
Dr. Howard Mzumara is a testing consultant who is helping us with this process by assessing and monitoring the psychometric characteristics pertaining to the exam. Dr. Mzumara is currently the Director of the Testing Center and an Adjunct Professor at the School of Education at IUPUI.
Note: The accreditation process is designed to be lengthy and thorough. Please be assured, however, that it is a retroactive process. Therefore, all of our designees will experience the benefits of obtaining a CDP or CDE credential from an accredited program.
What is the Institute for Diversity Certification's Process?
For Diversity & Inclusion certification candidates, the process is relatively simple. First, individuals apply for an exam. You choose which exam is best based on your professional goals. You can either prepare for the test by taking a preparation course or self-studying with a guide. Candidates will be able to choose their test date, time and nearest exam center.
PAN, (Performance Assessment Network), provides state-of-the-art, secure internet-based testing, and proctored administration at over 600 locations throughout the world. Find a testing center near you.
Candidates will also have to submit a candidate project prior to taking the test.
Candidates will receive a score report at the testing center or via e-mail within 24 hours of taking the exam. If you do not pass the CDP or CDE assessment, you may retake the test upon paying the exam fee only. There is no waiting period or limitation on the number of times you can take the exam.
Within 30-days, successful designees will receive an official certificate in the mail.
